Julia Lewing was born and raised on a family farm south of Leduc, Alberta. While studying, she has lived in Red Deer, Edmonton, and Utrecht, the Netherlands. She has her Bachelor of Kinesiology and was able to pursue art classes through Open Option credits and Continuing Education.
Julia has maintained an ongoing involvement in the local fine arts community through exhibitions and art displays such as, the Red Deer College Student Exhibition, Black Gold Schools: Celebration of the Arts, and has been featured as the Artist of the Month at Steeps Tea, Whyte Avenue. Most recently, Julia displayed her art work at ArtSmash 2016 exhibition through the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Extension.
Her drawings are mostly portraits done with pressed charcoal on Stonehenge. Charcoal has been her preferred medium because of the accessibility this medium provided her through school and travels and the appeal of creating art from virtually nothing. Julia’s signature work consists of subtle blends, reductive techniques, and an attention to detail which results in highly developed and realistic images. She is very interested in different features of the human body and exposing the underlying human experiences, personalities, and emotions through it. Julia is inspired by her awareness that anything can subjectively be beautiful.
“I want to be authentic and real with the portrayal of my portraits – I like to include the minor details to accurately represent the individual. I find that the more raw and real I am with the interpretation of my subject, the more beautiful the final product.” – Julia Lewing
Julia's tent will be set up at 10632-82 Ave NW (in front of Aveda).
