David Ian MacKinnon explores the limits of expression through non-representational forms. He creates his paintings by gradually adding and subtracting layers of colour until the final images emerge. Lines and shapes that have been painted over scar the surfaces of the works. These scars witness how the paintings developed and the processes the paintings went through to come into being.
David’s style has been strongly influenced by the art of the several countries he has lived in – Canada, Scotland, England, Spain and South Korea. In recent years, the work of the Scottish artist Callum Innes and of the South Korean Dansaekhwa (Monochrome) Movement have had particularly important impact on his art.
David currently lives and works in Edmonton, Alberta.
